Whether we were orange or yellow or green at the last elections, we hope that you will witness Wednesday’s presidential inauguration (at Quirino Grandstand or on TV) with your children and talk to them about it. Every turnover of power ushers a new era for our nation. On Wednesday, our whole nation will be united once again in hope for social change and political reform—enough reason to talk to our children about the event’s significance. On more school-related matters, we will be moving the Earthquake and Fire Drills schedule for July 2 to August 13. We shall also be moving this very important blog for parents on wordpress: http://therayaschool.wordpress.com/. We are doing this because the wordpress format will make it easier for preschool parents to access their pupdate, and the elem parents to find theirs. We’ll also be uploading our memos, pictures and school calendars on the wordpress site. Do expect this change within the next week. Happy week ahead! Teacher Ani Nursery Pawikan and Nursery Tutubi Hello J This month’s theme I am Me! focuses on discovering one’s roots, strengths and witnesses as well as potentials. Through our lessons and stories, we will find out that while each is unique in his own way, there are things that inevitably bind us. It’s going to be an exciting week. Our story is Ang Bilog na Itlog. This will serve as springboard for our activities on sequencing events, naming national symbols and developing a pre-math concept, identifying common attributes across objects. We shall also be starting on naming, identifying and sounding off letters, this week with M. Throughout the week we will be working on tracing our first names. On Friday, we will be making feelings masks for art. This week is an exciting time not only for us in Nursery but the country as well. On Wednesday we will take some time off school. May this new chapter in our history give us hope, enable us to rediscover our roots and strengths and drive us to achieve our potentials. Teacher Ruth Kinder Adlaw, Bulan and Tala Mabuhay! This week, our stories will be Mathematics of Twins and Filemon Mamon. We will talk about the different parts of the body and their uses. Once this has been established, we will discuss good hygiene practices such as washing of hands and brushing of teeth. In Math, the concept of matching will be introduced, understanding that certain things function better when used together. In Art, Teacher Poty will work on hand painting, focusing on identifying one’s feelings through color. Lastly, in the upcoming inauguration on June 30, 2010 we encourage you to either go to Quirino Grandstand and experience it first hand or watch it on television with your kids for them to know the significance of such a historic event. Teacher Nette and Teacher Nul 3-Makabayan Hi Grade 3 Makabayan parents! The kids enjoyed their past week as they had their first lessons with their different teachers. They also wrote the clubs that they wanted to have for this quarter. This week we will be looking at the different elements that make us unique. They will read My Most Fabulous Book and learn more about nouns in English. Here are some websites that you and your kids can visit to learn and practice about nouns: Abstract and Concrete Nouns- http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/abstractnoun.htm Writing with Concrete and Abstract Nouns- http://www.cabrillo.edu/services/writingcenter/290/nouns.pdf Grammar Handbook: Mass and Count Nouns- http://www.cws.illinois.edu/workshop/writers/massnouns/ Grammar Quizzes: Count and Non-count nouns- http://www.grammar-quizzes.com/agree2a.html In Filipino, they will read Ang Madyik ni Apo Meyor and discuss kailanan ng pangngalan. In Science, they will have an exciting lesson about fever as they make their own hand sanitizer. They will learn in IR how to organize the information they gathered. They will also continue their Cory Project with Teacher Ani. For their Araling Panlipunan, the kids will learn more about the other expeditions in the Philippines. They will have a “first things first” activity in C and I as they identify Filipino heroic personalities during the pre-colonial period. Sa Matematika naman, “comparing two sets of objects using the method of one-to-one correspondence” ang kanilang tatalakayin. I just wanted to share an exchange between Teacher Ria and her Kinder Tala students which Teacher Ria emailed me. When you read it, you'll know why Teacher Ria felt so inspired:
Note: This conversation happened after the reading and discussion of Swimmy.
Teacher Ria: Alam ba ninyo kung bakit walang pasok noong nakaraang Lunes? Jayda: I know teacher, it's EDSA Day! Melo: Yes, People Power. Teacher Ria: Do you know what happened during the EDSA revolution? Jayda: Yes, Marcos asked someone to kill Ninoy. Melo: Tapos nagPeople Power. Maxine: Tapos si cory...teacher, Swimmy is like Cory! Alab: And then, Mister Marcos left. He's the big fish!
Imagine connecting Swimmy to Cory and Marcos and EDSA. Let that be a reflection for all of us : )

On our last week in our theme My Country, the kids of Nursery are going to come up with answers to the question “How can I help my country?” The stories Ang Sabi ni Nanay, Ang Sabi ni Tatay and Chenelyn! Chenelyn! will surely teach us that being obedient and listening well at home and in school is the best way to do our part in helping the country. We will be painting portraits, solving math problems (completing an AABB pattern) and practice writing our names and numbers. We will also be taking part in a cleanliness campaign—through our posters, we will try to convince our fellow Rayans to be more aware about cleanliness in and around school. Teacher Lily will be teaching us a new song this week, too. Our letter for this week is K.
It's really interesting how kids as small as ours try to make sense of their environment-- their being Filipinos and their having a share in nation building : )
Looking forward to the week ahead!

Hello everyone!
In the past week, we talked a lot about the different places in the Philippines. Experiences from your previous trips around are truly memorable for your kids, evident when they tell their stories. As we spend our next weeks on discovering our country, let’s make their learning more meaningful. Let’s show them pictures of such beautiful places, like your hometown or province, to make them appreciate our homeland more.
This week, we shall be answering the question “What makes my country beautiful?” Our literary pieces The Story of the Tower of Babel and Ang Alamat Kung Bakit Kayumanggi ang Balat ng Filipino shall prove that its wonderful people is what really makes the Philippines a beautiful. With our letter of the week Y, we will continue to work on improving our name and number writing skills. We shall spend time talking about the Filipino language and why People Power is such an important event for us as a nation. Also, we will be talking about (and experience) some of the best food we have around.

3-Makabayan Maraming salamat sa lahat ng dumalo at nakibahagi sa Raya Olympics 2010! Congratulations to the Green team! We had so much fun during last Friday’s cake festival. We made buttercream icing (in three colors!) and designed our own cupcakes. The heavenly smell of butter mixed with the yummy aroma of chocolates and marshmallows made everyone want to eat the cupcakes already. But, we were able to wait until all the Raya kids and faculty had made their choice and cast their vote. Congratulations to Ice and James for bagging the Kids’ Choice award and to Miguel and Nikka for getting the Teachers and Staff’s Choice award. Next week, we continue with our discussions about freedom. We now focus on the ways we express or exercise our right to be free. We will use the literary piece, The Lonesome Snail as well as invite a guest parent to talk about a personal account during the People Power Revolution, to learn more about the exercise or restriction of freedom in various situations. We will also write short anecdotes about our own experience with regards to freedom in both languages. Parents’ Update, February 15-19, 2010 The Prep students are really enjoying and immersing themselves in their Puppets Project. They are doing all sorts of activities connected to their project: trying their hand at shadow puppetry with the Anino Shadow Play Collective; making clay and paper puppets with Teacher Diwa; and more recently, visiting the puppetry theatre of Teatro Mulat, one of the country’s oldest puppet troupes. They are actually going to start practicing for the much-awaited final representation of their project which shall be presented at their Pagtatapos in March. Aside from clearly showing the Prep students knack for theatre and all things artistic, the puppets are really eye-openers for us, their teachers. How they portray themselves as puppets—whether in paper or clay---truly show their unique and quirky impressions of themselves. By the way, for more puppetry-related fun, you might want to check out the ASEAN Puppetry Festival, which shall have puppet shows on Feb. 24 to 26 at the Abelardo Theatre, UP College of Music. For inquiries, call/text 0918.903.2040, 439.1471 or email papetir@gmail.com. First off, let me congratulate our Prep and Elementary students for participating in the first-ever Timpalakasan! Great job to everyone (including their advisers and Coach Russell!)! Congrats especially to the team that placed first in Larong Goma: Alexa ,Liam, Isabel I., Julia and Miggy as well as those that won in Bato, Bato Pik: Isabelle M. , Raya and Bini.
I also want to share with you the very special thing that the grade 2-Marangal kids did as part of their Citizenship and Identity class. After discussing heroism including a look at the example of CNN Hero Efren Penaflorida’s life, they wrote letters to their Kuya Efren. Some of them told asked how it felt to be bullied. Some of them praised him for his efforts to help poor children. Some of them even asked him to visit Raya! I was fortunate enough to meet Efren at a conference in Dagupan the other week, and share with him the letters from our Grade 2 students. I took a video of his reply to the grade 2 students which I’ll upload soon : ) Kuya Efren encouraged them to be heroes in their own way and to study hard. I hope the grade students really take his advice to heart.

Hello Nursery parents. Thank you very much for a truly memorable Raya Olympics!
Our current theme helps our children realize how things in their environment (like machines) can help them do the things that they want, with more ease and efficiency. Likewise, through talking about machines, we all realized that helping was an inevitable part of life.
This week, we will be exploring what machines are like and get a glimpse of how they work. Our story How Far Will a Rubberband Stretch? and Roundabout Train will take us to our lessons on putting things together (addition) and correctly using ordinal terms. We will also be doing machine inspired art projects and be experiencing the unique Filipino machine that is the jeepney. We will continue working on our writing and coloring skills. Our letter for this week is O.
On Friday, we are going to have a trip to the metro train. Everyone’s been looking forward the experience!
It's going to be an exciting week. Please take time to share your own favorite machines-- how work and help you-- with your child at home to make our “machine experience” more well-rounded. Thanks :)

Thank you to all the parents who reserved slots for the next schoolyear. Given our ever-growing Raya family, we are once again constructing additional classrooms. Teacher CP and I have long envisioned a three-storey building that we hope can be the home of both the preschool and the elementary. We know that the construction will pose some inconvenience to all of us, but we hope that you will understand, given the school’s desire to provide ample playing and learning spaces for all our Rayans. I’d like to thank the preschool parents who attended the Raya Olympics meeting last Friday. Go Green, Blue, Yellow and Red Teams! We are excited to see all the Rayans and Raya parents compete on January 30, 2010. We hope that you can also drop by school on Friday, January 15 to see the Elementary students’ Science Fair. Dear Preschool and Elementary Parents,
Since we lost a lot of schooldays to typhoons, we shall be extending our schoolyear. Classes will officially end on March 23, 2010.
Maraming salamat at Maligayang Pasko!
Teacher Ani and Teacher CP
I’m sure that everyone enjoyed the Mango Festival—complete with games, trivia about mangoes and delicious mango shakes—that the Grade 2-Marangal mounted last Friday. The festival was capped by the second graders signing their names on the can where Marita the Mango Tree was planted. How symbolic that the tree will grow as the school grows : ) Last Friday was also quite an eye-opener for the graders. The grade 1 and grade 2 students had lessons on Efren Penaflorida, a true-blue everyday hero. Their lesson on Kuya Efren will begin the grade 1’s exploration of poverty in the country, one of the most complex and far-reaching problems of our country. For the second graders, the lesson on Kuya Efren became a way to discuss bullying (which they hopefully do not experience in Raya) as well as the concept of heroism. Is Kuya Efren a hero in the same way Rizal is? This was something that they discussed and I hope you can also discuss at home. For the Makabayan class, they had quite a lesson on the role of the military. After hearing first hand from members of our military how they help construct schools and hospitals, how they do para-teaching in some remote parts of the country, and how they are bound by duty and honor to our dear country, they also had a lesson on Martial Law with me during their C and I class. I was very proud of their views on the role of the military and how a democracy is far better than military rule. Teacher Ani Grade 1-Matapat and Grade 1-Masinop Last week we studied about Pandiwang pangnagdaan and verb. In Math we talked about telling time. We had a game where in all of us acted as the long hand, and short hand of the clock. In Science we discussed about plants. In Crafts we finished our project in terra cotta clay. In Computer we discussed the steps in presenting documents using Microsoft Powerpoint. In Sibika we read the story Isang Mundong Makabata, and we watched a video clip about street children. In C & I, we watched the interview of Efren Penaflorida. We also discussed his advocacy for education. For this coming week, the grade 1 students will read the story Ason, Luming, at Teresing, Bully Big Pig. In language we will discuss the s form of the verb. In Filipino we will review and talk about pandiwang pangnagdaan and panghinaharap. In Math we will continue our topic about telling time. In Sibika we will talk about ten poorest provinces in the Philippines and what are the ways to alleviate poverty. In Computer we will continue our lesson about Microsoft Powerpoint. It will be a fun and exciting week for all of us. Christmas party is coming and I’m sure the kids are all excited to play, to open their gifts, and cannot wait to sing. Merry Christmas! Grade 2-Marangal Hi parents! We’re down to our last week for this year! Next week will be the start of a new theme, We Live in a Complex World. In line with this theme, the Grade 2-Marangal will identify factors that make the world complex. Our springboard pieces will be Munting Patak Ulan and The Greediest of Rajas and the Whitest of Clouds. In Englsih, we will move to common suffixes such as ful, let, less, able, ness. We will also spell some words with suffixes like peaceful and fearless. In Filipino, we will study about bahagi ng liham. We will also write a friendly letter in our Theme Writing. We will have an oral report in Social Studies about various provinces in Region IV. In Math, we will explore geometry in studying about point, line, line segment, ray, and polygons with three to ten sides. We will use the geoboards we created in our Shop class to familiarize ourselves with polygons. Next week, we will create our very own tansan tambourines in Shop for our Caroling on Friday. Finally, we will celebrate our last day through our Pamaskong Salusalo! Maligayang Pasko! Teacher Nette Maligayang Pasko! The 3rd graders gained more admiration and respect for our soldiers as four AFP officers visited the class last Friday and talked to them about their training, their other tasks and their routine. We were also able to learn about their hardships and the fun times they have while on duty. Their loyalty and dedication is truly commendable. Next week, we will discuss the importance of empathy. We have the literary pieces Tuwing Sabado and Another Mouse to Feed to help us highlight the reasons we show kindness to others and viseversa. Also, we will continue our lessons on adverbs in both English and Filipino, division, outlining and drafting and Microsoft PowerPoint. In Science, alternative energy will be introduced. Lastly, all levels of the elementary department will have a joint Christmas party on Friday. Letters will be sent regarding this so please be guided accordingly. Teacher Jeanne
Nursery Pawikan and Nursery Tutubi We have been spending a lot of time talking about animals in class, and the kids are very enthusiastic about it. They talk about a lot of things—the time you got them a pet, your trips to the zoo, how much fun they have at Lolo’s farm or when you went to Manila Ocean Park. Those moments really matter to your children and it shows, so please keep them coming! Now we are on our last week on the theme Animals Around Me. This week, our focus is on how to take care of animals. We will have the stories The Monkey and the Crocodile and Buzz Said the Bee as our springboard stories for our activities on identifying domesticated and wild animals, sequencing up to 3 events and using the pronoun It. We are also spending time to review the past lessons that we’ve had in class because we are a week away from the 2nd Trimester Assessment. We will also make time to talk about Pasko (tanging araw na ating pinakamimithi) and how we Filipinos celebrate it. Everyone’s excited because we are only 12 days away from our Pamaskong Salusalo! Teacher Ruth Kinder Adlaw, Bulan, Ulap and Tala This week we will look back on the different lessons we have learned this trimester. We will also uncover and discuss the different things that plants give people. We will find out the different purposes of plants through the story, The Tale of the Lady Cabbage. Since it is also the season of giving, we will learn what Christmas is all about, with the story Bertdey ni Dyisus Bukas. Local Christmas carols will also fill our classrooms in Music. Then, we will recite the different months in a year with the help of the song Lubi lubi. Lastly, we will reward our hard work this trimester with the movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Please review and confirm with us the set schedule for your child’s assessment and PTC written on the memo given to you. Don’t forget to have them bring their popcorn on Friday too! See you! Teacher Isbel and Teacher Toni Prep Bathala and Prep Kabunyian It’s barely 20 “sleeps” before Christmas. We will learn this week how Filipinos celebrate this much awaited holiday. We will start with the heartwarming story, The Little Match Girl. It will open our eyes on how the less fortunate kids see Christmas and how we can help them. In Music, Teacher Ria will teach us a Christmas song to exercise our caroling-worthy voices. In Art, we will create Christmas cards and gift wrappers out of recycled materials. In Math, Science and Reading, we will review all the topics we’ve discussed the whole trimester. Teacher Camille 1-Matapat and 1-Masinop A week too short but still filled with learning and laughter! The weekend seemed to give the kids enough time to get recharged. When they came back this Thursday, we spent time reviewing their tests. They also excitedly made colorful tails for their parols. Everyone was so excited to decorate the classroom in preparation for Christmas. In connection to the Christmas spirit the kids are starting to feel, the springboard piece that we will try to use in English on Monday is the story of Estrellita, the Little Wishing Star. We will have a discussion on how planning, commitment and sometimes even sacrifice are essential in achieving one’s goal. In Filipino, they will read Malaking-Malaking Bahay. In connection to this story, they will talk about how blessed they are compared to some Filipino children. They will study verbs in Language and Pandiwang Pangnadaan in Filipino. The next word family to be discussed in Reading includes words with consonant blends at the end. In Sibika, they will take a look at how poverty affects the education of kids their age. In Culture and Identity, we will try to introduce them to people and organizations that are helping these kids. We will start learning how to tell time by the hour and half-hour in Math. In Craft, they will finish their terracotta pots and finally we will have our culminating activity in their Parol Project. The calendar for the 3rd quarter was also released this week. Please take note of the many activities lined up for your kids. Teacher Jen and Teacher Noreen 2-Marangal In keeping with our theme, We Are Interconnected, this week’s lessons will focus on answering the following questions: How do Filipinos connect with other Filipinos? What traditions keep Filipinos united? We will read the literary pieces Ang Mga Selyo ni Lolo Benicio and Guido’s Birthday. In Math, we will focus on Estimation and measurement of length in meters/centimeters. In Filipino, we will study pang-angkop while in English, we’ll tackle common prefixes. In Social Studies, we will conduct a review on Regions 1-4. In Sewing, we will continue our cross stitching; try to progress a little more with our geoboards in Shop; and move further in our MS Powerpoint lessons in Computer. In Theme Writing in both English and Filipino, our feelings regarding the upcoming holidays will be our anchor. As with past weeks, we will work on our Singapore Math worksheets as well as our SRA. In C and I, Efren Penaflorida will be the focus of our lessons, as a way of inspiring the graders to be heroes in their own right. Friday will be spent thinking up the Mango Festival which will cap our Mango Project. Here’s to another busy week! Teacher Nanette 3-Makabayan Next week’s lessons and activities will focus on the purpose and kinds of relationships. We will identify those that we have and those that are either around us or new to us. The literary pieces Manik Buangsi and Jamil’s Clever Cat will help us understand relationships that exist between humans and other life forms. We will also write about the relationships that we have and the ways that we can strengthen them. In Science, relationships among animals and plants will be discussed extensively. Meanwhile, in Math, we move on to Division while shape and form will be tackled in Art. Lastly, on Friday, we’ve invited a guest speaker to talk about the kinds of relationships and their value to their chosen profession. We are also completing the last leg of our representation work for our Movies Project. Hopefully our little movie will be shown to our fellow graders on our last day : ) Teacher Jeanne
Happy Bonifacio Day! While we were all busy preparing for the Pista, the Kindegarten students were actually wrapping up their Ibon Project. I’m sure you’ve heard stories from your Kindergarteners about the wildlife biologists they’ve met, their fieldwork at the aviary of the Ninoy Aquino Park and of course, their birdwatching trip with the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines. And throughout the duaration of each project, the students answer the questions they posed at the start of the project. In the end, the teachers try to predict how the students would answer the very last project question, “How would you like to share what you’ve learned with the other students of Raya?” And like every other project, the faculty wasn’t able to predict what the students came up with: half of them wanted a newspaper on birds (which they called, Bukas Diyaryo) while the other half came up with the idea of a bird machine! The bird machine was situated in the library and in it, students could hear bird sounds, see pictures of birds and pretend they were in a forest. How they represent their learning has always been imaginative and unpredictable. No matter how we prepare for their project, the students always come up with ideas and inputs that we weren’t prepared for. And this is precisely why we do projects in Raya: they challenge the faculty, reminding us that we should be flexible, just as imaginative and always on our toes. Congratulations to Teacher Toni and Teacher Isbel for skillfully facilitating such an enjoyable and fruitful project. Teacher Ani Nursery Pawikan and Nursery Tutubi Hi Nursery Parents! This week, we are having two stories about how animals help us—Buzz Said Bee and Ang Mabait na Kalabaw will feature animals that help people at work as well as give food and clothing. We will have activities that involve sorting, grouping and arranging things according to physical attributes. We will also play games that will help us identify more endemic animals. We are also working on identifying number symbols 11-15, as well as counting rote up to 20. J is this week’s favorite letter. Teachers Ria and Lily are having a follow-up activity on high and low notes using the instrument ahong. Also, please help us practice writing our names (in small caps) at home. Maligayang araw ng magiting na si Andres Bonifacio! Teacher Ruth Kinder Ulap, Tala, Bulan and Adlaw The Christmas spirit is spreading fast with the parol and lights that surround Raya. We will add our very own Christmas tree decorations this week as we continue our theme on plants. Waiting for Wings and Alamat ng Pinya will be our springboard pieces for this week. In Science, we will identify the different types of plant. As for Math, we will review our numbers 1-50, place value and skip counting by 10. In Language and Arts, we will learn and review describing words and action words. Then, we will review all the letters and letter sounds we have covered. We will also identify and write short vowel Aa. Lastly, we will make a graph of all the plants that are found in the garden. Happy Bonifacio Day! Teacher Toni and Teacher Isbel Prep Kabunyian and Prep Bathala As we end the Plants Around Me theme this week, we will learn about the benefits people get from plants and how we can take care of them. The story Bakawan will make us realize the consequences of throwing too much trash. The poem, Tree, on the other hand, will help us appreciate God’s beautiful creations. More Filipino words with letters Rr and Dd will be introduced. In English, written exercises on short vowel u will be done. We will review the ordinals in Math, too. We’ll also get to know more of the brave Andres Bonifacio in Cultural Literacy. Teacher Camille
